We got a call from a Levin Contractor saying that the shafts had seen far better days. The teeth had been grinding against each other over time and with significant load from the rear implements – this is accelerated, finally resulting in a completely worn through PTO shaft. These can’t be repaired so it was a replacement job, and it needed to happen fast.

This problem can start with sudden jolts or shock, that could cause a tooth to chip, and once that happens, there’s more movement between the inner and outer shafts than there should be. That extra play accelerates wear on the neighbouring teeth, and it becomes a compounding problem: more chipped teeth, more movement, more damage.
A tell-tale sign it’s happening is when the driver experiences loss of drive to the rear when the two splines disconnect. At that point, the shafts are simply spinning aimlessly instead of transferring drive – a clear signal something’s worn through.
Preventative maintenance. regular oil changes in particular, is money well spent here. Clean, well-lubricated components are far more resilient to the small shocks and jolts that start this whole chain reaction.Â
