The Job: A PTO Shaft That Had Been Through the Wars
A workshop over in Australia reached out to us recently with a Deutz-Fahr Agrofarm 85 transmission in rough shape.
The PTO top shaft had taken a serious beating, worn down by a seized bearing that had been quietly causing chaos for some time. By the time it came to light, the damage had spread to surrounding gears and bearings too.Â
Where could they find everything they needed, and fast?
The Fix: Getting the Transmission Back in Action
With the details of the tractor and the damage in hand, we pulled together everything needed to get the job done right; the PTO top shaft, gears, bearings, bushings, seals, and all the surrounding components that had copped the collateral damage.
ProPart supplied a mix of genuine, OEM and aftermarket, which we tend to do wherever possible. Same reliability, significantly lower cost. On a repair of this scale, that kind of saving $$ makes a real difference to the workshop and their customer without cutting a single corner on quality.
The full repair kit incliuded:
2.2021.017.0 – PTO Thrust Bearing
0.010.0998.0 – Gear Z – 24 M3.25
0.008.5108.0/30 – Reduction Unit Shaft
Once the order was packed and ready, it shipped across the Tasman without a hitch. No customs delays, no surprise fees – straight through and on the bench ready to go.
ProPart Insights: Why PTO Shaft Wear Gets Missed
PTO shaft wear is one of those failure modes that can creep up slowly. A bearing starts to degrade, clearances open up, and by the time there’s a noticeable symptom (vibration, noise, or loss of drive) the damage has already spread.Â
On a working tractor like the Agrofarm 85, the PTO system is under constant load. Bearings that aren’t regularly inspected or lubricated are the usual starting point. Once one seizes, the shaft it’s running on starts to wear rapidly, and neighbouring components follow.
It’s worth keeping an eye on PTO performance – any unusual noise, vibration, or roughness in engagement is worth investigating early. Catching it at the bearing stage is a very different job to catching it after the shaft is gone.
